Memphis judge dies of self-inflicted wound

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — A Memphis judge has died after shooting himself in a car outside the Memphis Country Club.

Memphis Police say they received a call at about 5:45 p.m. on Monday, moments after the shooting. Police say 63-year-old Oscar Carr III was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Administrative Office of the Courts issued a statement from Chief Justice Sharon Lee praising the Shelby County chancellor, who was appointed to the bench by Gov. Bill Haslam last October. The statement calls Carr “a highly respected member of the legal community” and says “we were proud to have this great man join the judiciary last fall as he embarked on a career in public service.”

Carr had previously worked for 38 years with Memphis’ Glankler Brown law firm.
