Jackson man faces sex offender registry charges, drug counts

DOWNTOWN JACKSON — A man police say is in violation of sex offender registry laws faced a judge Thursday in Jackson City Court. Tyler Wayne Banes has not paid the annual $150 sex offender registry fee for 2013, 2014 or 2015, according to court documents. Banes is a registered sex offender on a 1990 conviction in Madison County of aggravated rape and aggravated sexual battery, the documents state. He is required to register as a sex offender for life as long as he lives in Tennessee. When an officer approached Banes, he fled into the bathroom of a business in the 500 block of East Main Street, according to an affidavit. Banes fought as an officer attempted to handcuff him, and police say they then found five individually wrapped bags of marijuana and some loose marijuana on the floor nearby. Banes is charged with violation of the sex offender registry, evading arrest, resisting arrest and possession of marijuana with intent. Banes was issued a $100,000 bond.
