UNION CITY, Tenn. — A celebration of life was held Wendnesday in honor of Robert Kirkland, the noted West Tennessee businessman and philanthropist. Kirkland, who passed away Saturday morning at age 77, is known for the national chain of home decor stores that bears his name, but most recently for envisioning and funding Discovery Park of America in his hometown of Union City. A lifelong friend says she will cherish her memories of him. “I will remember his humor,” said Mary Nita Bondurant, marketing director for Discovery Park of America. “He had the most wonderful sense of humor of anybody I’ve ever met. He was intelligent, and he was just a joy to be around.” Discovery Park was closed Wednesday to the public for the celebration of life service.
