UNION CITY, Tenn. — Union City police say a couple’s argument escalated quickly Saturday morning as the husband grabbed a machete and chased his wife out of their home. Officers said they showed up to a bloody scene on East Martin Luther King Jr. Drive. They received an initial call about a man wielding a machete. Officers said when arriving at the scene they found Bruce Hughes bleeding. Officers said Hughes threatened to cut his wife but ended up cutting himself by accident. Police determined he had been drinking. “There was blood on the floor, around in the living room, in the kitchen,” Sgt. Brandon Adams said. Adams said Hughes’ wife called for help, saying a heated argument escalated to dangerous levels. “He got mad, went to the closet, got a machete,” Adams said. Adams said Hughes was in jail until Monday when he was released on bond. Neighbors said they hoped the couple can settle their arguments without anymore violence. “I would have been scared,” neighbor Joyce Williams said. “I would’ve called the law too.” Union City police said Hughes’ arraignment is scheduled for 1 p.m. June 23.
