MILAN, Tenn. – Milan’s football team can’t wait for Friday. The Bulldogs are ready to play their season opener against Trenton Peabody now. “If I can go right now, I would get on the bus right now,” senior Alan Staggs said after Wednesday’s practice. “That would be a great way to start off our season — 1-0.” Only two teams beat defending Class 2A State Champions Peabody in 2014. Milan was one of them. Jaleel Buckner believes defeating the Golden Tide will “turn a lot of heads.” “They’re a good team. They won state. Everyone expects for them to beat us Friday,” Buckner said. “Whoever gives the most effort is going to win the game. It’s going to come down to one-on-one battle with the man in front of you.” Milan Jeff Morris hopes his team plays the same way they did last year against Peabody. The Bulldogs were the only team to limit Peabody to single digits in 2014. “Our perimeter people have to be where they belong at all times. They have to separate from blocks and they have to run to the football,” Morris said about his defense. “If you’re one on one in open space with these guys, you’re going to miss tackles.” Morris added it’s great to start the season against one of their longest rivals. “The guys know one another. It’s personal to one another and the community,” Morris said about Trenton and Milan. “It’s a great rivalry for us and added spice of them being defending state champs makes it even better.” Kickoff on Friday between the two is at 7:30 p.m. Our LIVE coverage from the game begins at 5 p.m.
