COVINGTON, Tenn. – It doesn’t take long to notice what’s different about Covington’s football team when looking at the Chargers’ roster. This year’s team has 18 seniors compared to four in 2014. “Compared to last year, it’s a great mark,” head coach Marthy Wheeler said about his depth of seniors. “The year we went to the state championship in 2012, we had 26 seniors. It varies, but we’re pleased with our senior class.” One of the Chargers goals this off-season was getting stronger. Coach Wheeler believes his team accomplished that. “Anytime you’re stronger, more physical and faster than the year before, you should definitely be better,” Wheeler said. “We want people to beat us. Not for us to beat ourselves.” The Chargers identity on offensive will remain the same being run heavy, but the team still has some unanswered questions. “As young as we are, we have a combination of some inexperience and some guys that played last year,” Wheeler said. “I think that’s what tomorrow [Friday] is –– finding out exactly where we are.” The Chargers season kicks off on Friday against Munford.
