University of Tennessee at Martin’s football program has grown accustomed to playing Southeastern Conference teams in the past decade. The Skyhawks played Kentucky and Mississippi State last season. Both contests resulted in losses giving the school an 0-5 all-time record against SEC opponents. UTM’s extends their tradition against one of college football’s best conference on September 5. The Skyhawks visit nationally ranked No. 15 Ole Miss for their season opener. “We played 14 FBS schools in nine years and after this year it’ll be 16. And we have three next year,” head coach Jason Simpson said. “We know we have to do it for monetary reasons. Two this year because we’re trying to finish the stadium and that was part of the deal we have to agree on.” Simpson added that his guys prefer playing the tougher competition compared to flying up North. “These are schools they followed since they were kids,” Simpson said. “See them on television each week. It’s a great experience and great memories.” Saturday‘s game kicks off at 11 a.m. on the SEC network. It’s also the first meeting between the two schools in program history.
