Experts say web worms not harmful to trees

JACKSON, Tenn. — Big webs and worms in the trees — it’s that time of year across West Tennessee. Web worms are similar to the caterpillar, spinning webs and developing into moths. Experts tell us they’re harmless and won’t cause much damage to trees because they focus on eating the leaves. If you don’t like them for aesthetic reasons, here’s a suggestion to tackle the web. “I think the best thing to do is take a stick and rip open the web,” said ornamental horticulturalist Carol Reese, saying that will let birds and insects get to the worms to eat them. “If you really want to prevent it, you probably have to do it next year before they really get a good start.” Reese says the bugs are native to this area and can be expected every year.
