Mayor Gist visits White House as part of first lady’s initiative

JACKSON, Tenn. — Mayor Jerry Gist joined First Lady Michelle Obama at the White House on Wednesday for a celebration honoring the achievements of local elected officials participating in the Let’s Move! Cities and Counties initiative. Also in attendance were representatives from the National League of Cities and several federal agencies, according to a release from the city. The first lady announced that 500 cities, towns and counties, including Jackson, have committed to the five goals of the Let’s Move! initiative since July 2012, according to the release. The goals include creating a healthy start for children; empowering parents and caregivers; providing healthy food in schools; improving access to healthy, affordable foods; and increasing physical activity.
