JACKSON, Tenn. — Experts urge extra awareness of the dangers of carbon monoxide, long dubbed the “silent killer.” Marking the first instance of Tennessee’s Carbon Monoxide Awareness Day on Friday, Tennesseans are urged to recognize symptoms of its poisoning. The gas is created once fuels, such as gasoline, propane or natural gas, burn incompletely from furnaces, cars or camping gear. “If you have gas appliances — gas water heater, gas furnace — there’s always a chance that they won’t light correctly and you’ll have carbon monoxide,” said Chief Max Stewart with the Jackson Fire Department. Friday’s holiday was signed into law earlier this year by Gov. Bill Haslam.
