JACKSON, Tenn. — The sign in front of RMA Express Mart in north Jackson is pretty straight forward — show your carry permit and get a free soda or coffee. “The owner, he had went to another establishment and they didn’t allow legal gun carriers to come into their store with their gun showing,” general manager of RMA Express Mart Stephanie Kearse said. So for the second year in a row, clerks are handing out free drinks at what store managers call a minimal cost to doing business. “It just supports the legal right to carry,” clerk Rickey Kennemore told WBBJ Wednesday. “It doesn’t support the guns, it supports people who are legally getting these.” Workers say about 10 people a day come in, show their permits and get a free drink thanks to the offer on the sign out front. Customers WBBJ spoke with said they’re glad there’s a business in the Hub City supporting gun rights. “It’s the constitutional right to carry a gun, and I think our Constitution says it, so I’m in favor of it,” customer Jim Weatherford said. “We’ve got right-to-carry laws here in the state, and I think that it protects us all when criminals know that people are armed and can shoot back,” customer Tim Cook said. “I’ve got a big love for guns, and for them to post it up there, it’s like my favorite store,” customer Patrick Veal said with a gun on his hip. None of the customers we spoke with Wednesday said they had a problem with the store’s promotion. Store managers say they’ve received no complaints about the sign and plan to keep it up for the next month or so.
