Savannah prepares for West Tennessee River Run

SAVANNAH, Tenn. — Friday night, Mayor Bob Shutt’s home turns into a mini-Music City for a night where singers and songwriters come together and play. “I’m just fortunate enough that I can live here and we can have these events, because it helps the city of Savannah,” Mayor Shutt said. Saturday, the Tennessee River Run celebrates 14 years, bringing in an estimated $100,000 to the Darryl Worley Foundation. The foundation helps the Darryl Worley Cancer Center in Savannah as well as the Leader in Me Program, a program for Hardin County Schools. The weekend also is a huge boost to downtown Savannah. Gail Boggan said her restaurant, “Good to Go Gourmet,” is ready for hungry customers. “We’re hoping this year, because it’s going to be nice and cool, they’ve got a great lineup, that we’ll have a really good turnout,” Boggan said. Savannah’s downtown area will be closed off to vehicles Saturday and open to the crowds. The Savannah Police Department says they’re ready for thousands to show up with extra manpower. Ten extra officers will be on duty, and THP troopers and Hardin County deputies will be downtown as well. “There’s still going to be people driving under the influence of alcohol, drugs or both, and we have to make sure they don’t drive into the crowds,” Savannah Police Chief Gary Will Jr. said. Police said with thousands of people in one area, it’s important to take directions from officers, which makes for a safer and more fun environment. “Follow directions when people are directing traffic,” Chief Will said. For Mayor Shutt, it’s events like these that make Savannah stand out on the map as a vacation destination. “We’re just very proud of it.
