MADISON COUNTY, Tenn.– Officers and first responders from around the state and country came together Thursday night to honor a Madison County Deputy killed in the line of duty this week. And they did it, in one of those most highly regarded and honorable fashions known to first responders. “This is what makes the world stronger, this is the way you support family and God,” Marty Clements, Madison County EMA Director said. It is called the “Sea of Blue,” all to remember fallen Madison County Deputy Rosemary Vela killed in the line of duty when Deputies said her car ran off the road Monday night. “It’sa tremendously emotional time from the sheriff on down,” Tom Mapes, Public Information Officer for the Madison County Sheriff’s Dept., said. Hundreds of officers and first responders from across the state and country lined up to pay tribute in their very own special way. “Blue is certainly something you relate to law enforcement and to have a sea of blue, it certainly shows a force and we are united as one,” Captain Tyreece Miller with the Jackson Police Department said. An estimated two-mile procession flooded the streets with the color blue, the very streets the officers serve and protect. “They make their way through the community to let everyone know that they are solid,. working together for the good of everybody,” Clements said. It was a breath-taking and humbling site that started at West Jackson Baptist Church. Then taking the hundreds of badges to the crash site of Deputy Vela where a wreath and cross now are on display to honor a deputy that was truly loved. “Emotions have been high and we need all the prayers we can get to encourage us and pick it back up. We are feeling that love,” Mapes said. Deputy Vela was 24 years old, a mother, a public servant and someone that will be deeply missed by an entire community.
