TSSAA to require background checks for high school referees

JACKSON, Tenn. — The TSSAA has issued a new requirement for those looking to officiate high school sports in the Volunteer State. At their meeting Thursday night, the state’s governing body over high school sports voted to require all referees to complete a background check before being confirmed as an official. West Tennessee referee officials say it’s just an added precaution to protect student athletes. To be an official, applicants have to reapply and complete the proper training each year to be accepted, and background checks will be added to that yearly list.
