Towing vessels collide at Memphis; river traffic restricted

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) – The Coast Guard says two towing vessels have collided on the Lower Mississippi River near Memphis, restricting river traffic there.

No injuries were reported in the collision shortly after noon Monday.

The Margaret Ann and the William Strait collided at mile marker 727. Coast Guard Lt. j.g. Brian Porter said the William Strait partially sank in 20 feet of water.

Porter said a safety zone has been established around the collision, and traffic is being assessed as it comes.
