Mayor-elect chooses Sweat to lead Memphis FD
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) – Memphis Mayor-elect Jim Strickland has chosen Gina Sweat to become the first female director of the Memphis Fire Department.
The Commercial Appeal (http://bit.ly/1m2mMGv ) reports Strickland announced Sweat’s selection on Monday. She is a 23-year veteran of the department, which had only four female firefighters when she joined.
Strickland called Sweat a “landmark leadership choice” and said she was selected on her merits and dedication.
Strickland takes office on Jan. 1.
