Bryant names Eupora lawyer to fill circuit judge vacancy
JACKSON, Miss. (AP) – Gov. Phil Bryant is naming a Eupora lawyer to fill a judicial vacancy being created by the retirement of Circuit Judge Clarence Morgan III.
The appointment of George Mitchell Jr., announced Friday, is effective Jan. 1. A special election to fill the position will be held in November.
Mitchell will serve in the 5th Circuit Court District, which includes Attala, Carroll, Choctaw, Grenada, Montgomery, Webster, and Winston counties.
The new judge served as the city attorney and prosecutor for Maben for eight years and currently serves as the lawyer for the Webster County school board.
Mitchell is a military veteran who has also served as a judge on the Mississippi Court of Military Appeals.
