Former New Houlka town clerk arrested

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) – Agents from the State Auditor’s office have arrested former New Houlka Town Clerk Twilla “Gay” Williams after a Chickasaw County grand jury indicted her for embezzlement.

The auditor’s office, in a news release Friday, said Williams resigned in August 2014.

According to the indictment, between October 2012 and December 2013, Williams is accused of embezzling $10,047.72, from the town’s water department by altering the deposits and taking the remaining cash.

It was unknown if Williams has an attorney who could comment on her behalf. Bond information was not immediately available.

State Auditor Stacey Pickering says his office will work to return the funds in question to the citizens of New Houlka.
