Haywood girls preparing for first state tournament since 1995

BROWNSVILLE, Tenn — Five area girls basketball teams are busy hitting the practice court this week to make sure they’re ready for their state quarterfinal match-ups.

The Haywood Tomcats are making their first state tournament appearance since 1995, meaning none of the girls on the team currently were even born when they were last playing for a state championship.

Haywood’s coach, Whitney Baird, who played in the state tournament herself, said this team is working on staying steady through their last set of games.

“I think it made them hungry. We made it to sub-state last year and we didn’t achieve out goal. We didn’t make it to state,” Coach Baird said. “Its so devastating being that close and not making it so I think they were very focused this year and their goal, our goal was we made it this far last year, now let’s do one better and lets make it to state and not only that, lets get a gold ball like the boys have.

The Tomcats said they’ll be leaving for Murfreesboro Wednesday.Haywood State Preps
