Conservation group buys 2,050 acres on Pine Mountain
PINEVILLE, Ky. (AP) – A conservation group has purchased 2,050 acres on Pine Mountain in an effort to protect it.
Media outlets report that Kentucky Natural Lands Trust announced Tuesday it had completed the purchase. The trust says the tract cost $1.5 million and will be called The Narrows Preserve.
Trust executive director Hugh Archer says he had been working on buying the land for 14 years. The purchase is the single largest addition of land added to the Pine Mountain Wildlife Corridor – a project to protect the 125-mile stretch of Pine Mountain along the state’s southeastern edge.
The purchase also helps fill the remaining gap in the Pine Mountain Scenic Trail, Kentucky’s portion of a planned 1,800-mile-long hiking route called the Great Eastern Trail from New York to Alabama.
