Marines and Mickey charity investigated after complaints

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) – The Naval Criminal Investigative Service is investigating complaints about a charity that partnered with the mother of a Marine killed in the Chattanooga attacks this summer.

The Chattanooga Times Free Press reports members of the Lance Cpl. Skip Wells Foundation have publicly accused John Simpson of misappropriating funds.

Simpson runs Marines and Mickey, a charity that sends service members and their families to Disney World.

Simpson befriended Cathy Wells and they held joint fundraising events.

Jason Weeks is a co-chairman of the Wells foundation. He says members of his group complained after they became suspicious of Simpson’s claimed military service and how he was spending money they raised together.

Simpson did not return calls to the paper but wrote on his website that all donations were spent appropriately.
