Gunfire inside west Jackson apartment complex sends one man to jail

JACKSON, Tenn. — A Jackson man has been jailed since Thursday on charges that he fired a 12 gauge shotgun into the air at Guardian Court Apartments along Hollywood Drive.   Sylvester Smith appeared in Jackson City Court, Monday.  He faces counts of reckless endangerment (with a firearm) and resisting arrest.

According to court papers, around 9:15 p.m., March 10, police went to the apartments after reports that Smith had been firing a gun.  The documents show Smith admitted to firing the weapon.  He said he did it because some of his neighbors had thrown a rock through his window.  He told officers he took his brother’s gun and fired a “warning” shot into the air.

His additional charge came when officers said he resisted their attempts to take him into custody.  Court papers show he “locked his arms to his side” as officer tried to put his arms behind his back.  Smith is also accused of pushing officers as he tried to get away from them by running to the back of his apartment.  He was eventually detained.

Smith’s bond is set at $25,000.
