Skyhawks win in opening round of CIT

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Alex Anderson scored 21 points – including the final five points of the game – to help the University of Tennessee at Martin men’s basketball team claim a 76-73 victory at Central Michigan in the first round of the 2016 Postseason Tournament.

Anderson made six of his 11 field goal attempts, including five 3-pointers. In addition to his sixth 20-plus point outing of the year, the senior out of Memphis, Tenn. handed out four assists against zero turnovers in 38 minutes.

UT Martin reached the 20-win plateau for the second straight season thanks to a balanced scoring attack, as 10 different Skyhawks scored tonight. Javier Martinez tallied 13 points (on 6-of-6 shooting) with seven rebounds while Jacolby Mobley tossed in 11 points in 10 minutes for UT Martin, who also received a game-high 10 rebounds out of Twymond Howard.

The Skyhawks shot 45.8 percent (11-for-24) from three-point range for the game and connected on 15 of their 28 field goal attempts (53.6 percent) in the second half.

After the game, it was announced that the Skyhawks would face the Ball State Cardinals on the road in the second round of the CIT.

It will be the second matchup against a Mid-American Conference team in as many games for UT Martin, who last played Ball State in 2011.
