Shelby County board delays closure of high school by 1 year
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) – The Shelby County school board has backed off of an initial vote to close two high schools at the end of this school year.
News outlets report that the board on Monday decided to delay a vote on Carver High School and voted to close Northside High School, but not until after the 2016-17 school year.
Messick Adult Center and Memphis Academy of Health Sciences are still due to close at the end of this year, per the board’s vote last month.
Closing a school that the district runs directly requires two votes by the board.
Board member Mike Kernell says he wants additional time to consider Carver’s fate after being presented with a plan from the community to keep the school open. It’s unclear when the Carver vote will take place.
