Bear suspected in Pike beehive turnovers

MCCOMB, Miss. (AP) – A beekeeper in Pike County says he suspects that a black bear has marauded some of his hives.

Glen Roberts tells the McComb Enterprise-Journal (http://bit.ly/1TitKRX ) that he first noticed something was amiss Monday evening after he spotted four damaged hives.

He says the frames were pulled out and scattered through the grass. When he walked up a hill, he says he found three hives and that it appeared as if something had eaten them.

On Tuesday, he noticed that a lid had been shoved off another batch of hives.

Roberts says people have reported seeing a black bear nearby and he suspects it was the animal that caused the damage. He says nothing else could have knocked over the hive in the manner it did.

Family members have notified a wildlife conservation officer about the incident.
