Indiana group to dedicate marker to War of 1812 veteran
ENGLISH, Ind. (AP) – A southern Indiana group will dedicate a marker next month for a soldier who fought in the War of 1812 before settling in Indiana.
The marker dedication for Pvt. Philip Crecelius will be June 5 at Crawford County’s Mount Eden Cemetery, where he’s buried in an unmarked grave.
The Clarksville-based Jonathan Jennings Chapter of the United States Daughters of 1812 arranged for the marker honoring Crecelius.
The (Jasper) Herald reports (http://bit.ly/1snUQAa ) that Crecelius was born in 1794 in Washington County, Tennessee and served with the East Tennessee Volunteer Militia during the War of 1812.
He and his parents settled in what’s now southern Indiana’s O’Bannon Woods in 1816. Crecelius married twice and had 17 children.
He died in 1850 and is buried with his two wives.
