New law requires jail time, fine for shooting in Jackson

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) – People who fire a gun within Jackson city limits will now face mandatory jail time and a fine.

Multiple media outlets report the Jackson City Council voted Tuesday to amend the shooting in the city ordinance. Those caught discharging a weapon will now face 90 days in jail and a $1,000 fine.

Councilman Kenneth Stokes, who introduced the new ordinance, says the stiffened penalties will send a message to people that the city is serious about stopping gun violence.

Jackson Police Chief Lee Vance says he is happy the council decided to support his department by creating an ordinance that requires mandatory jail time for those who violate the law.

The ordinance allows for legal exceptions such as self-defense.
