Defendants accused of drug activities near schools

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) – A narcotics detective in Memphis watched a man exit a bus from Chicago and climb into a vehicle. Another officer tried to pull over the vehicle for traffic violations, but the driver fled. During the pursuit, a bundle flew out of the window.

Police say it contained more than 1,000 grams of heroin. The Commercial Appeal reports the three men in the vehicle were indicted on drug charges.

They’re among 19 people indicted on charges that they allegedly engaged in a conspiracy to possess with the intent to sell heroin near schools.

During interviews near the schools, people talked about the impact of a heroin conspiracy near children. Rudell Funzie says the indictments were “a good thing.” Sandra Bowles says a heroin organization operating near the schools is “crazy.”
