Petal officials move ahead with annexation process

PETAL, Miss. (AP) – Petal officials are moving ahead with annexation plans over the objects of those being annexed.

The Hattiesburg American reports the mayor and board of aldermen plan to annex about 9 square miles, which would include around 710 residents. City officials say the move will help the city better plan for its future.

The move was formalized in a vote at the board’s regular meeting last week.

Higher taxes, school district taxes and public safety were among the concerns voiced by county residents.

Mayor Hal Marx said there will be no change to school districts, so where a child attends school now will be the same after annexation. The school taxes will remain the same as well. Residents in Forrest County School District will not pay Petal School District taxes.
