Union County woman faces embezzlement charge

SHERMAN, Miss. (AP) – Sherman police have arrested a Union County woman on felony embezzlement charges.

Police Chief Joel Spellins tells WTVA-TV Wednesday that officers arrested 25-year-old Marianna Torres, who worked as a cashier at Wild Bill’s Truck Stop in Sherman.

Spellins says she’s accused of taking over $10,000 in cash and merchandise from the store. He says she hadn’t worked there for some time and officers had been looking for her after concluding their investigation.

Torres is currently being held in the Pontotoc County jail on $10,000 bond.

Spellins says Torres is the adopted daughter of Janet and Ramon Baretto, who pleaded guilty in 2008 to culpable negligence manslaughter charges in the death of her 2-year-old adopted sister.

Spellins says Torres had been released from probation several months ago in that case.
