Long Beach moves ahead on go-cup ordinance

LONG BEACH, Miss. (AP) – The Long Beach City Council has passed a motion directing the city attorney to draft a proposed “go-cup” ordinance that would allow open containers of alcohol on the streets of a designated entertainment district.

Tuesday’s measure was the city’s first step in taking advantage of the new state law permitting cities on the Gulf Coast and about a dozen other localities to set up entertainment districts where people can walk from one establishment to another without having to trash their beers, cocktails or wine.

The statute mirrors the liberties enjoyed by New Orleans tourist hot spots.

The Sun Herald reports the city council plans to review and hold a final vote on the ordinance at the next meeting on June 21.
