Rock climbing open at Breaks Interstate Park
ELKHORN CITY, Ky. (AP) – A park along the Kentucky and Virginia border is officially open for rock climbing.
Tourism officials say the addition of rock climbing at Breaks Interstate Park will strengthen the park’s draw as a destination for adventure tourism.
Other recreational activities at the park include world-class paddling in the Russell Fork River.
The Breaks Interstate Park canyon is lined with miles of orange and gray sandstone walls. Officials say it’s similar to the Obed Wild and Scenic River and the New River Gorge, in Tennessee and West Virginia, respectively.
Climbers at the Breaks Interstate Park are required to get a free climbing permit, which can be obtained at the visitor center or lodge. Climbing is only open in approved areas of the park.
Breaks Interstate Park is in Kentucky and Virginia.
