Inmate escapes from Louisville Metro Corrections

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) – Authorities are searching for an inmate who they say escaped from Louisville Metro Corrections custody while he was assigned to a kitchen work detail.

Officials say in a news release that 37-year-old Smith Edward Vance escaped from custody on Wednesday when he ran away from the site of a dumpster on the outside of the jail.

Vance was arrested in April on charges of theft and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Louisville Metro Corrections spokesman Steve Durham says officials are conducting an internal investigation into Vance’s escape.
