Tennessee holding drawing for sandhill crane hunting permits
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) – The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency will hold a drawing on Aug. 13 for permits to hunt sandhill cranes.
According to the agency, 400 permits are available and each carries a limit of three birds.
The drawing takes place at the Birchwood Community Center in Hamilton County. Registration for the drawing begins at 8 a.m., with the drawing to take place at 10 a.m. The permits are non-transferable and individuals must be present to obtain them.
Any leftover permits will be issued on a first-come, first served basis beginning Aug. 17 at 10 a.m.
Hunters must also pass a test to demonstrate their ability to distinguish between sandhill cranes and protected species.
Each winter, thousands of sandhill cranes migrate through the Hiwassee Refuge in Birchwood.
