Bristol lawyer charged with stealing from estate

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (AP) – Authorities say a Bristol lawyer has been charged with stealing from an estate for which he was serving as executor.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation said Thursday that it began investigating 70-year-old Don W. Cooper in November 2015.

The TBI says agents found that Cooper stole more than $10,000 from an estate in which the beneficiary was supposed to be St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Cooper was charged with theft over $10,000 in an indictment. He turned himself in to the Sullivan County Jail on Thursday and was released on a $15,000 bond.

Cooper was also indicted on one count of theft over $250,000 in April. The TBI says that charge involved theft of property from a different estate.

A phone message left for Cooper’s lawyer was not immediately returned.
