Louisiana pet food wholesaler moves warehouse to Mississippi

COLUMBIA, Miss. (AP) – Nelson Wholesale Service is moving a pet food and pet product distribution center from Louisiana to Mississippi, bringing 20 jobs to Marion County.

The company announced Wednesday that it’s buying a 100,000 square-foot warehouse in Columbia previously used by Orleans Furniture.

Based in Ponchatoula, Louisiana, and Brownwood, Texas, the supplier of feed stores and pet centers says it’s spending $2 million to move from its current warehouse in Hammond.

Nelson will renovate the building and plans to start operations in December.

The Mississippi Development Authority is giving Nelson $15,000 to help with building improvements and moving equipment.

Columbia and Marion County are expected to consider property tax breaks, but estimates of their value aren’t yet available.

MDA spokesman Jeff Rent was unable to say how much the jobs would pay.
