Madison County Commission narrowly passes measure to move forward with proposed new jail

JACKSON, Tenn. — Madison County Commissioners gathered for their first meeting of the new fiscal year, Monday night.

Commissioners were expected to discuss a new request by Madison County Sheriff John Mehr for $30,000.  He’d asked for the funds for a study on updating the air conditioning system within the sheriff’s office.  However, he withdrew that request, halting all discussion.

County budget officials told WBBJ 7 Eyewitness News, commissioners are not opposed to the study.  But the funds for any study will have to come from the sheriff’s current budget.

Also, in a close vote, commissioners approved spending $210,000 to move forward with the initial phase of building a new jail.  The measure passed by just three votes.
