Renewed effort underway to bring bike share to Knoxville
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) – Knoxville officials want to bring a bike share program to the city that is home of the state’s flagship public university.
The Knoxville News Sentinel reports that Councilman George Wallace says the idea for a bike share program has enthusiastic support, but will require a lot of work to get accomplished.
Wallace has met with representatives of the city’s Office of Sustainability, the University of Tennessee and nonprofit organizers to examine other bike share programs in cities like Nashville.
Advocates say the program could help residents and tourists get around in an environmentally-friendly way, while also improving health and mobility.
An effort to introduce a bike share program three years ago failed. Sustainability Director Erin Gill says Knoxville is better positioned today because of bike-friendly upgrades to the city’s roads.
