Man charged with contributing to delinquency of a minor involving gun count

JACKSON, Tenn. — Michael Allen Smith Junior faces two separate charges after police say he tried to get away with illegally having a loaded gun by giving it to a 17-year-old.

Smith was charged in Jackson City Court with unlawful possession of a firearm and contributing to the delinquency of a minor, Monday.

According to court papers, on September 16, investigators with the Jackson Police Department’s Gang Enforcement Team spotted Smith standing by a car in a parking lot in the 600-block of Whitehall Street.  The officers said they saw Smith raise his shirt, exposing a gun in his waistband.

Officers believe that’s when Smith spotted the officers and began walking toward a truck sitting in the parking lot.  The 17-year-old juvenile was near the pickup truck.

When the gang officers approached Smith, they said the gun was no longer where they saw it in the waistband of his pants.  A search of the teen turned up a gun in the waistband of his pants.

Offices said the .9mm Taurus handgun was loaded with six rounds in the magazine but no rounds in the chamber.
