Dr. Glen R. Bonifield, 76, of Bells was indicted this week, according to a release from the West Tennessee Violent Crime & Drug Task Force. The indictments include 25 counts of TennCare fraud and one count of theft over $10,000.

The charges involve the billing of TennCare for high-cost medication that patients never received and the sale of bogus prescriptions for cash, according to the release.

The investigation reportedly began in 2015 with agents purchasing controlled pills and crack cocaine from pharmacy employees as well as passing bogus prescriptions with Bonifield in exchange for cash.

That investigation led agents to serve a search warrant on the pharmacy where about 35 pounds of controlled substances along with illegal weapons and alcohol were seized, the release states.

Bonifield is being held in lieu of a $350,000 bond and is scheduled to appear Friday in Crockett County Circuit Court.
