Local Red Cross chapter trains volunteers for hurricane relief

JACKSON, Tenn. — Local volunteers trained Friday with the American Red Cross to help victims affected by Hurricane Matthew.

Red Cross hurricane reliefThe Red Cross hosted the training session at its office in north Jackson. Volunteers learned how to assess damage along with ways they can help.

Leaders with the Red Cross say these volunteers could be deployed as early as Saturday. They will deliver supplies and help with cleanup.

“I think they’re going to get a huge experience as far as relief and just the ability to go in and help people and to spend two weeks going in and working in a directly impacted area,” Disaster Program Manager Heather Carbajal said.

The Red Cross says they will continue to send volunteers to the coast as long as they are needed.
