Daughter of arrested lawmaker now says he did not hit her
COLUMBUS, Miss. (AP) — The daughter of a Mississippi lawmaker says she lied to police last week by telling them her father had hit her during an argument.
First-term Democratic state Rep. Kabir Karriem of Columbus was arrested Tuesday and charged with misdemeanor domestic violence.
Multiple news outlets report Monday that his daughter, 18-year-old Mariah Yazmine Karriem, has signed an affidavit saying she made a false statement to police when she originally told them her father had hit her in the head Oct. 10.
The 43-year-old lawmaker was released on his own recognizance soon after his arrest, and he has an Oct. 27 court date.
His attorney, Austin Vollor, says he is “confident in the outcome” for his client.
