Memorial service honors 5 family members killed in Henry Co. fire

HENRY COUNTY, Tenn. — Wednesday was a somber day in Henry County as a community said goodbye to five members of the Pollack family, killed last week when their home caught fire.

“The Pollack name is a very well-know name in our community because it’s such a large family,” Lakewood Principal Amy Veazey said. “They were a loving family and loved their children dearly.”

Jimmy Pollack Sr., his wife, Carrie, and their children J.J., Ivey and Callie all died in an early morning blaze last Friday in Buchanan.

“I would say the emotion at school was one of shock,” Veazey said.

“When you lose five members in one family all in one night — I’ve run out of words to describe that,” Sulphur Well Church of Christ Minister Randy Stephens said. “I’ve never had one like this.”

At the memorial Wednesday afternoon, the community paid their respects and showed support for Rose and Lilly, the only Pollack kids who made it out of the fire alive.

“Rest assured that we’re going to continue to support this family and love this family,” Veazey said. “Lilly returned to school on Monday because she wanted to be with her friends and her family at school.”

Many embraced Charlene Pollack, the grandmother who will raise the girls. Minister Stephens says the girls and their grandmother are thankful for everyone’s willingness to help their family.

“They lost everything they had,” Stephens said. “Clothes in the house, furniture and all that. But they lost family, they lost each other. And with God’s strength we’re going to be OK. We’re going to get through this.”
