Weakley Co. Sheriff’s Office warns residents of scam

WEAKLEY COUNTY, Tenn. — The Weakley County Sheriff’s Office is warning the public of a Publishers Clearing House scam.

Word Scam on the background of one hundred dollar bills

According to a news release, deputies were notified of the scam after a Weakley County resident sent $700 to an individual claiming to be from Publishers Clearing House. The money was meant to pay taxes and a processing fee before the resident’s winnings could be delivered, according to the release.

Investigators remind residents to never send money to anyone you do not know or to collect a prize. They say you should also never deposit a check to send part back.

Publishers Clearing House has a fraud protection page, and investigators urge residents to check with the organization if you are contacted by someone who claims to be with Publishers Clearing House.

The release says that, once you send money, local law enforcement will not be able to get that money back.
