West Tennesseeans look for best costumes

JACKSON, Tenn. — According to the National Retail Federation, Halloween spending is expected to reach $8.8 billion this year alone.

The Halloween countdown is on, and people are shopping for their best spooky, sweet or cutest costumes.

“I’m gonna be a scarecrow, and he’s gonna be a construction worker,” said customer Stephanie Jones.

Consignment operator and owner for the region’s Spirit stores Glenn Gardner explains some of the most popular costumes this year.

“Steampunk, which is a big thing. It’s kind of a category versus one costume, so you get all kinds of looks. It’s a rocker and industrial cross,” Gardner said. “For kids, we have baby shark. That’s always hot. Toy Story is always hot. All of the movie things are always something people look for.”

He also says that superheroes are a classic favorite in the area.

“Anything from Spiderman in the kids section to Flash, any of those. But then, Fortnite is a giant one. That’s in both adults and kids,” Gardner said.

For the last minute shoppers, Gardner said that DIY costumes are most popular.

“That’s like rabbit ears, fox ears and a fox tail, or a unicorn horn, things like that,” Gardner said.

Halloween lovers are also getting their statement spooky decor.

“Any of the big animatronics, things that fill your front yard easily and makes a big statement,” Gardner said.

All Hallows’ Eve is just a week away.
