Outdoor gym equipment installed at Shirlene Mercer Park
JACKSON, Tenn. — Community members enjoy some healthy new additions to a local park.
In addition to the walking trail at Shirlene Mercer Park in east Jackson, community members can also use new exercise equipment.
There are five machines installed along the walking trail, and some are wheelchair accessible.
Funds for buying the equipment came from a Tennessee Department of Health grant.
Shirlene Mercer Park was chosen after looking at a health assessment of the community.
“We discovered that this particular community has a higher increase of diabetes, heart disease, and stroke,” Quill Brabham, community health education director for the Jackson Madison County Regional Health Department, said.
“This will help all of the people in the community over here come and walk, and have a place to exercise,” Chester Area Neighborhood president Callesia Smith said.
Using the equipment is free, and you’re asked to clean it before and after using it.
