Clay Nebhut Saunders
Clay Nebhut Saunders passed away on Sunday, September 26, 2021 at National Health Center in Milan, Tennessee after a protracted illness.
Mr. Saunders was born on October 10, 1939 to Shirley Nebhut Saunders and Irene Boyd Saunders. He was raised on the Saunders family home place near Rossville, Tennnessee, attended Rossville Elementary School, graduated from Collierville High School in Collierville, Tennessee, and earned a Bachelor’s Degree from Memphis State University in Memphis, Tennessee in 1957.
After graduation he joined the FBI and worked for a time in Washington, D.C. before enrolling in Law School at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, Tennessee, where he served as editor of the Law Review. Following graduation from Law School, he served as Law Clerk for Federal Judge Marion S. Boyd in Memphis, then was appointed Prosecuting Attorney for Shelby County, Tennessee, before spending a number of years in private practice.
The last number of years he spent in business and retirement in Jackson, Tennessee, where he was an avid member of the Jackson Rotary Club. He has been nationally recognized for his very successful fund-raising efforts in behalf of Rotary International charitable projects.
Mr. Saunders was predeceased by his parents and his brother Lanny Saunders. He is survived by his daughter Alyson Saunders, son Clay Saunders, Jr. and grand-daughter Lauren Bergeron, all of Austin, Texas, and two brothers, Lee Saunders of Rossville, Tennessee and Boyd Saunders of Chapin, South Carolina.
Funeral Services for Mr. Saunders will be held at 1 P.M. Friday, October 1, 2021 at the Peebles Main Funeral Chapel in Somerville with Glenn Vanderford officiating. Interment will follow in the Pleasant Grove Cemetery at Moscow. A visitation for Mr. Saunders will be from 11 A.M. to 1 P.M. Friday, October 1, 2021 at the Peebles Main Funeral Chapel in Somerville.
