Sound the Alarm event comes to Jackson

Today a community wide event took place to help prevent house fires here in the Hub city.

JACKSON, Tenn. —The American Red Cross, Midwest Tennessee Chapter held the Sound the Alarm event.

Sound the Alarm is a national event recognized by Red Cross all across the organization.

Members with the Red Cross went into the east Jackson community to delivery and install free smoke alarms.

Along with the alarms, they also asked families if they have an escape plan in case there’s a fire.

The group goes to different communities, but based off of data and research they found that there’s been a spike in house fires in east Jackson.

“There’s tremendous effort by the local city and county fire departments, a lot of the times we just realize that people aren’t doing the due diligence to check their homes for fire safety and to make sure they don’t have fire hazards,” said David Hicks, Executive director, American Red Cross Midwest TN Chapter.

Not only were smoke alarms installed there was also an education portion on fire safety.
