Unpredictable. Dangerous. Iconic. The Pikes Peak International Hill Climb Drops The Green Flag On Its 99th Year This Sunday!

CHARLOTTE, NC — It is described as unpredictable, dangerous, and iconic. Yet, you’ve probably never heard of the historic Pikes Peak International Hill Climb.

The extreme motorsports race is about to drop the green flag on its 99th year! Bahakel Sports, a division of our parent company, will stream the race live on June 27th, you can tune in on wbbjtv.com/sports/pikes-peak and on our mobile app.

Morgan Fogarty is in Colorado to find out more about the Race to the Clouds!

The annual race draws competitors from all backgrounds – from X Games athletes to stunt car drivers. From major motor manufacturers to grassroots teams. You can find them all at Pikes Peak International Hill Climb!

Event historian Lisa Haight says it all started back in 1916 when local businessman and philanthropist Spencer Penrose created the race to advertise the newly established roadway. The race is now well known across the globe but is still gaining traction in the states, even in its home state.

“It’s funny because when you travel, people say oh you work for Pikes Peak Hill Climb, if they’re from another country. If they’re from Colorado Springs, they’re like what?”, says Lisa Haight

Drivers don’t get to see the whole course until race day. There are no rain delays, no pit stops, no warm-up laps, and an altitude change that’s tough on drivers.

The green flag drops on the 99th running of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb this Sunday.
