City Considers Future of Lambuth Campus

“We’ve watched neighbors leave the neighborhood and it would be sad if Lambuth was the next neighbor to leave.” Kati Rhody graduated from Lambuth in 2006, she now lives across the street from the university and teaches there part time. She said rumblings about the future of Lambuth are circulating around the campus. “I’ve heard very little but I’ve heard the University of Memphis might be interested in merging with Lambuth.” Jackson Mayor, Jerry Gist said there is truth to that rumor. That indeed the University of Memphis has shown interest in establishing a Jackson Campus.” Our first option obviously is that were looking at is a state supported public intuition, on campus and that marriage will be the University of Memphis, Jackson campus.” ‘ Right now a federal injunction is the only thing preserving the schools accreditation should Lambuth close it’s doors come May. The Mayor said the city must be ready and that is why on Thursday he held a high level meeting that included Lambuth’s president. “8 people in the room with the governor talking about contingency plans for Lambuth in the worst case scenario.” Mayor Gist said for this campus to survive, the state must help, something that Rhody hopes will happen.” If it allows the school to stay open I’m all for it, I hope they can stay Lambuth. Really it’s about the core school.”
